Grade 2: Visit to Food Square Supermarket

As part of our Global Perspective curriculum, second graders went on an educational field trip to Food Square Supermarket in Worli. The aim of the visit was to gain insights into how food from different parts of the world reaches us.

In the grocery store, the students studied the labels on fruits and vegetables and different categories of food. These labels informed us of the country of origin for that particular food. It was astonishing to discover that a selection of our food is imported from the USA, Australia and New Zealand!

At the supermarket, we looked at the bakery, the candy aisle and the frozen food section. The students pointed out that eating too much ‘Maida’ is harmful to our bodies as it does not contain much nutrition.  Different sections had numerous items that were bright and colourful. The bakery smelled appetizing. The candy aisle was filled with bright, shiny wrappers and this section was the children's favourite section.

Following the visit, the students were put in groups where they discussed which was their favourite section and why. A few students liked the bakery and some of them liked the frozen food section and some liked the fruits section. The students even got to enjoy some fresh fruits from the USA which was a delicious surprise!

In the end, the students learned something new about the world around us which was the purpose of the trip.
