Grade 1 Special Assembly

On 20^th July, 2026 the Grade 1 students of St. Mary’s International School came together to present a special assembly on the topic International Nelson Mandela Day. Standing in a neat line before the school, our youngest students greeted everyone and announced their topic — International Nelson Mandela Day, observed every year on 18th July.

Taking turns they shared this year's theme, “It's still in our hands to combat poverty and inequity,” and explained it simply: help those who have less, share, care, and treat everyone with kindness and respect. They told us that Nelson Mandela was the first Black President of South Africa, who believed every person deserves equal treatment whatever the color of their skin, and that education, kindness and helping others can change the world.

Then came their promises which the students can actually practice - share books, crayons and toys, speak kindly, never leave anyone out of a game, be thankful, and never waste food or water. Then they explained the big idea though they may be small, but their actions can make a big difference.

The assembly closed with a short video on Mandela's life and work, leaving everyone with one thought: no act of kindness is too small.
