On 24th February, the Kindergarten students of St. Mary’s International School embarked on an enriching educational visit to Veermata Jijabai Bhosale Udyan (Byculla Zoo), where they had the opportunity to observe and learn about a wide variety of animals in their natural surroundings.
The children’s adventure began in the aquatic bird section, where pelicans, ducks, spoonbills, flamingos, and storks moved gracefully across the water, and some even took flight, delighting the little visitors. They then explored the aviary, where colourful birds such as cockatiels, rose-ringed parakeets, Malabar Pied Hornbill, African Grey parrots, and Military Macaws captured their attention with bright feathers and cheerful chatter. The children were fascinated by the variety of birds and eagerly discussed their unique features and habitats.
As they continued their journey, the children observed turtles, tortoises, and crocodiles. The playful colony of Humboldt penguins brought smiles to every face as they waddled and swam about. They also spotted a leopard resting in the shade of a tree and admired its golden coat patterned with dark rosettes. Nearby, a curious hyena moved about, and the antelope, deer and bears wandered leisurely in their enclosure. One of the most thrilling moments of the day was seeing the magnificent tiger up close. The children watched in awe and pure delight as the tiger splashed and moved about in the water right before their eyes. They closely observed the animal’s movements and behavior, making the experience both exciting and educational.
The kindergarteners also took a moment to appreciate the beauty of nature, observing various plants, trees and enjoying the greenery around them. They learned about the importance of conservation and caring for animals and their habitats, fostering a sense of responsibility toward protecting wildlife.
The field trip to the zoo was a perfect blend of fun and learning, leaving the children with cherished memories and a deeper appreciation for wildlife and the natural world—a glimpse of God’s wonderful creation.
